The nomination period for the election of the judges of the International Criminal Court was opened on 9 September 2002, in accordance with article 36 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and the resolutions on the procedure for the nomination and election of judges, the Prosecutor and Deputy Prosecutors (E, F, S, R, C, A) and on the procedure for the election of the judges of the International Criminal Court (E, F, S, R, C, A), adopted by the Assembly of States Parties on 9 September 2002. In accordance with paragraph 11 of the resolution on nomination and election of judges, the Prosecutor and Deputy Prosecutors, the nomination period for the first election of the judges of the International Criminal Court shall, subject to its paragraphs 5 and 13, close on 30 November 2002.

Note: The nomination period for the judges of the International Criminal Court closed on 30 November 2002. In a letter addressed to all States Parties, dated 2 December 2002 (English, French, Spanish), the President of the Assembly of States Parties announced that the minimum nomination requirements, laid down in paragraph 13 of resolution ICC-ASP/1/Res.2 on the procedure for the nomination and election of judges, had been met.

As of 30 November 2002, 43* nominations were received and processed.

* By a communication, dated 13 December 2002, the Government of Paraguay announced the withdrawal of the candidature of Mr. Luís María Benítez Riera. By a communication, dated 13 January 2003, the Government of Benin announced the withdrawal of Mr. Kocou A. Capo-Chichi.
