The Commission held its sixty-sixth session at the United Nations European Headquarters in Geneva from 5 May to 6 June and 7 July to 8 August 2014. Highlights included:

- adoption, on second reading, of the articles on the expulsion of aliens;
- adoption, on first reading, of the articles on the protection of persons in the event of disasters;
- conclusion of the work on the topic "the obligation to extradite or prosecute (aut dedere aut judicare)";
- inclusion of the topic "crimes against humanity" in the programme of work of the Commission;
- inclusion of the topic "jus cogens" in the long-term programme of work of the Commission.

The Convention on the Law of the Non-Navigational Uses of International Watercourses (F), adopted on 21 May 1997, on the basis of the draft articles adopted by the Commission in 1994, entered into force on 17 August 2014.
