Election of members of the Board of Directors of the Trust Fund for the benefit of victims provided for in article 79 of the Rome Statute

The Assembly of States Parties, at the 5th meeting of its second session, held on 12 September 2003, elected the following members of the Board of Directors of the Trust Fund for the benefit of victims, by acclamation:

  • Mr. Arias Sánchez, Oscar (Costa Rica)
  • Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah (Jordan)
  • Mr. Tadeusz Mazowiecki (Poland)
  • Archbishop Desmond Tutu (South Africa)
  • Mme. Simone Veil (France)

Background

The Assembly of States Parties, in its resolution ICC-ASP/1/Res.6 (E, F, S, R ,C ,A), adopted at its 3rd meeting on 9 September 2002, established a Board of Directors of the Trust Fund for the benefit of victims provided for in article 79 of the Rome Statute. In its resolution ICC-ASP/1/Res.7 (E, F, S, R ,C ,A), adopted on the same day, the Assembly further established the procedure for the nomination and election of members of the Board of Directors.

At its 11th meeting, on 22 April, the Assembly decided, upon the recommendation of the Bureau, to open the nomination period for members of the Board of Directors of the Trust Fund for the benefit of victims of crimes within the jurisdiction of the Court, and the families of such victims to run from 28 April to 21 August 2003 and the Secretariat was requested to issue an official note inviting nominations.

By the closure of the nomination period on 21 August 2003, the following nomination had been received:

  • Mr. Arias Sánchez, Oscar (Costa Rica)

At its first meeting of its second session, the Assembly of States parties decided to extend the nomination period from 8 to 10 September. By the closure of the extended nomination period, the following additional four nominations were received:

  • Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah (Jordan)
  • Mr. Tadeusz Mazowiecki (Poland)
  • Archbishop Desmond Tutu (South Africa)
  • Mme. Simone Veil (France)

The election is scheduled for the second session of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute, to be held at United Nations headquarters, New York, from 8 to 12 September 2003.
