Visiting law schools to showcase the Office of Legal Affairs and to discuss current legal issues with students is an activity that Mr. Serpa Soares enjoys whenever his schedule allows him to do so.

Mr. Serpa Soares very much believes that encouraging law students to study international law and to consider working for the United Nations as part of his mandate.
Against this background, Mr. Serpa Soares recently visited three Law Schools in the New York area. On 26 March 2014, Mr. Serpa Soares discussed current legal issues with students at New York University - School of Law. The visit occurred at the invitation of Professor José Alvarez and the discussion with students was moderated by Professor David Malone, the Rector of the United Nations University in Tokyo, Japan.
Columbia Law School
On 27 March 2014, Mr. Serpa Soares spoke about his first six months as the Legal Counsel of the United Nations at the Center on Global Governance at Columbia Law School. The co-directors of the Center, Professor Gardner and Professor Doyle, had invited the Legal Counsel. The visit was facilitated by two distinguished former senior officials of the Office of Legal Affairs, Adjunct Professor Larry Johnson, former ASG for Legal Affairs, and Adjunct Professor Bruce Rashkow, former Director of OLA's General Legal Division.

Hofstra University's Maurice A. Deane School of Law
On 21 April 2014, Mr. Serpa Soares delivered the Third Annual Philip J. Shapiro Endowed International Visiting Scholar Lecture at Hofstra University's Maurice A. Deane School of Law. At the invitation of Professor Julian Ku the Legal Counsel spoke about "Legal Aspects of Modern United Nations Peacekeeping".
