Overview

The activities of OLA are governed by a number of General Assembly resolutions, a Secretary-General's bulletin, the biennial programme plan, and priorities for the period 2008-2009. According to the biennial programme plan for the period 2008-2009, OLA is responsible for Section 8, programme 6, Legal Affairs (see paras. 8.1 - 8.43 of the plan). The overall objectives of this programme appear under Mission Statement.

OLA is headed by an Under-Secretary-General with an Assistant Secretary-General as deputy. There are presently some 160 staff members in OLA. Its biennial budget is estimated at US$ 36 million.

United Nations Office of Legal Affairs provides a unified central legal service for the Secretariat and the principal and other organs of the United Nations and contribute to the progressive development and codification of international public and trade law.
