The Legal Counsel, Mr. Serpa Soares, addressed the Second Open Meeting of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf

On 10 March 2017, the United Nations Legal Counsel addressed the Second Open Meeting of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf in the Trusteeship Council Chamber. The Open Meeting was held to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the establishment of the Commission and to reflect on its work and achievements since 1997. The other speakers at the Open Meeting were the Chair of the Commission, Mr. Lawrence Awosika, the Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority, Mr. Michael Lodge, the President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, Mr. Vladimir Golitsyn, and three members of the Commission, Messrs. Galo Carrera, Mazlan Madon and Walter Roest.

Mr. Miguel de Serpa Soares, Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs, the Legal Counsel, the Chair of the Commission, Mr. Lawrence Awosika, the Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority, Mr. Michael Lodge, the President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, Mr. Vladimir Golitsyn and the other members of the Commission.

The Commission is one of the three institutions established under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The Office of Legal Affairs provides secretariat services to the Commission through its Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea. The Open Meeting concludes the two-day commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of the Commission which had started on 9 March 2017 at which the Legal Counsel conveyed welcoming remarks. The celebration of the anniversary was made possible with the generous support from Canada, China, Japan, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka."
