United Nations Legal Counsel Mr. Miguel de Serpa Soares visits the United Mission in Colombia

From 20 to 23 April 2017, the Legal Counsel of the United Nations, Mr. Serpa Soares, visited Colombia to familiarize himself with the work of the United Nations Mission in Colombia on the ground, in order to provide optimally targeted legal advice from Headquarters in support of the mandate of the Mission. Mr. Serpa Soares met with the National Component of the Monitoring and Verification Mechanism and did a field visit to San José de Oriente, where he had the opportunity to meet with the staff of the Regional Office in Valledupar and of the Local Component of the Monitoring and Verification Mechanism as well as visit the FARC-EP campsite.

Mr. Serpa Soares also discussed questions relating to the United Nations role in the establishment of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace and, in particular, the support provided to the Selection Mechanism of the judges and other officials of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace and other institutions of the Comprehensive System for Truth, Justice, Reparation and Non-Repetition. The Final Peace agreement in Colombia gives the Selection Mechanism the responsibility of selecting the judges and other officials for the justice component of the agreement. The Secretary-General designated one of the five members of the Selection Mechanism.
