Activities of the Legal Counsel of the United Nations

The United Nations Legal Counsel, Mr. Miguel de Serpa Soares, started his outreach activities in the New Year with a visit to the University of Pennsylvania Law School in Philadelphia. .

In the framework of “Penn Law Dean’s Distinguished Speaker Series”, Mr. Serpa Soares held an interactive conversation with Mr. Theodore Ruger, Dean and Bernard G. Segal Professor of Law on the topic “Law at the United Nations: What Difference Does it Make?”. He was introduced by Ms. Rangita de Silva de Alwis, the Associate Dean of International Programs. In the hour-long conversation which included in an interactive manner the audience, the UN Legal Counsel and Dean Ruger covered a wide range of topical issues, including the role and mandate of the UN Office of Legal Affairs, international law at the UN, current issues with regard to oceans and the law of the sea, international criminal justice, the use of force against ISIS and many more. Whenever his time allows him to do so, Mr. Serpa Soares enjoys visiting academic institutions to have informal exchanges with faculty and students.
