Legal Counsel signs exchange of letters with China

The Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel, Mr. Miguel de Serpa Soares, and the Permanent Representative of the People's Republic of China, His Excellency Mr. LiuJieyi today concluded an Exchange of Letters which provides that the Government of the People’s Republic of China agrees that the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China will loan an expert to work at the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific.

The Regional Centre, which was officially opened in January 2012, has as its main objectives: (a) enhancing international trade and development in the Asia-Pacific region by promoting certainty in international commercial transactions through the dissemination of international trade norms and standards, in particular those elaborated by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL); (b) providing bilateral and multilateral technical assistance to States with respect to the adoption and uniform interpretation of UNCITRAL texts through workshops and seminars; (c) engaging in coordination activities with international and regional organizations active in trade law reform projects in the region; and (d) functioning as a channel of communication between States in the region and UNCITRAL.
