United Nations Legal Counsel addresses the Sixth (Legal) Committee of the General Assembly
at its opening meeting

At the invitation of Ambassador Tuvako Manongi, Permanent Representative of the United Republic of Tanzania to the United Nations and Chairman of the Sixth Committee of the General Assembly, the United Nations Legal Counsel, Mr. Miguel de Serpa Soares, addressed the Committee at its opening meeting on 7 October 2014.

In his brief welcoming remarks (en Français) Mr. Serpa Soares – himself a former Sixth Committee delegate – emphasized the outstanding talent, professionalism, camaraderie and mutual respect as characterizing features of Sixth Committee delegates. He congratulated Chairman Manongi, the members of his bureau and rapporteur Zappalà on their election and wished them and delegations the best of success for their ambitious programme of work ahead of them. Recalling the long and impressive list of achievements of the Committee Mr. Serpa Soares pledged his full support to the Committee and all its Member States.
