Somalia Deposits Instrument of Ratification to the Convention on the Rights of the Child

On 1 October 2015, in the context of the 2015 Treaty Event organized by the Treaty Section of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs, Somalia ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child, becoming the 196th State Party to the Convention, the most widely ratified human rights treaty.

The instrument of ratification was deposited by the Prime Minister of Somalia, H.E. Mr. Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, in the course of a ceremony officiated by the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel, Mr. Miguel de Serpa Soares. The ceremony was witnessed by Ms. Marta Santos Pais, Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children, Ms. Leila Zerrougui, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict,, and Mr. Ted Chaiban, UNICEF Director of Programmes.

The Convention will enter into force for Somalia on 31 October 2015.
