Visit by the Legal Counsel to London, United Kingdom
From 17 to 19 June 2019, the United Nations Legal Counsel, Mr. Miguel de Serpa Soares, visited London, United Kingdom.
The main purpose of Mr. Serpa Soares’s visit to London was to chair the 2019 meeting of the Legal Advisers of the Specialized, Related and other Organizations of the United Nations System. The annual meeting of the network of Legal Advisers of the United Nations System provides an opportunity for discussion of legal issues of common interest and concern to the Legal Advisers of the participating entities. They are held to improve coordination and communication among the Legal Advisers and to promote system-wide legal coherence. The meetings also provide the Legal Counsel with an important opportunity to brief the Members of the Network on current legal issues facing the Organization.

The 2019 meeting was hosted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and was held at its Headquarters. The Secretary-General of the IMO, Mr. Kitack Lim, took the time to welcome the Legal Advisers and to address the meeting. IMO’s Secretary-General Lim also received the Legal Counsel for a bilateral meeting during which he briefed on the priorities for the IMO.
