Special Tribunal for Lebanon –
A Tribunal of Many Firsts

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon conforms to the long tradition of criminal prosecutions at the international level, beginning with the Nuremberg and Tokyo tribunals after the Second World War and continuing since the 1990s with tribunals for the Former Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Cambodia, and the International Criminal Court. The Special Tribunal for Lebanon has, nevertheless, several characteristics which are unique, starting with its creation, structure, applicable law, jurisdiction, and levels of hybridization. An insight into the unique features of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon will assist judges and lawyers in future cases where these features may be adopted.
